Features » Not one species but two

The Western Indian Ocean has great fish biodiversity and many species are unique to specific geographic locations. However, marine biodiversity in the WIO is still little studied and poorly understood.

Newly described species - Gymnothorax elaineheemstraeGymnothorax elaineheemstrae is a new species of moray eel described by Sithole et al. in a study recently published in the international peer-reviewed journal, Zootaxa.

The description of a new endemic species, Gymnothorax elaineheemstrae, increases information on the WIO’s marine biodiversity and, particularly, that of South Africa.

This information will contribute to implementation of management and conservation strategies to sustain our rich marine biodiversity.

Further, the correct identification of this species may lead to other scientific studies in the future, such as ecology, behaviour and conservation biology. Read More
