SAIAB Bursaries



The purpose of this bursary, which was established by the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) in 2016, is to provide support to one financially needy student pursuing an honours degree in the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science (DIFS) at Rhodes University. This bursary is limited to students intending to pursue careers in the fields of Systematics, Taxonomy and Ecology.

Eligibility criteria

  • the applicant must provide written proof of acceptance into the honours degree programme in the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science (DIFS) at Rhodes University
  • the applicant must demonstrate financial need, and proof that they have or are also seeking financial support from other sources
  • the applicant’s honours project must focus on any of the three priority areas (Systematics, Taxonomy or Ecology)
  • the project should be done in collaboration with SAIAB but the supervisor does not have to be a SAIAB scientist

Award information

The maximum amount for this once-off bursary is R30 000 per year but SAIAB reserves the right to not award the bursary if no suitable candidate is found.

The deadline to apply is 25 February 2017. Completed application forms should be submitted to the DIFS Head of Department who will forward the applications to the SAIAB Selection Committee. The SAIAB Selection Committee comprises three scientists from different aquatic biodiversity disciplines. The Selection Committee meets at the end of February each year to evaluate the applications.  

SAIAB’s expectations

Upon completion of the DIFS Honours project, the candidate is expected to provide a brief report to SAIAB highlighting the key findings of the study.
