An assessment of the effectiveness of the St Lucia Marine Reserve in the protection of shore angling fish species.

A long-term fish monitoring and tagging project has been conducted in the St Lucia Marine Reserve north of Cape Vidal since November 2001. The data collected will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of this marine protected area (MPA) by answering the following key questions:

  • By using the no-take sanctuary as a bench-mark, is there evidence of recovery in the adjacent previously exploited area (Cape Vidal to Leven Point) since the implementation of the beach-vehicle ban in January 2002?
  • What are the fine-scale movement patterns of key shore angling species in the MPA and is there evidence of spillover into the adjacent exploited areas?
  • How large do no-take MPAs need to be to ensure suitable protection of important shore angling species in northern KZN?
