Is longline fishing for catfish a livelihood option in the Eastern Cape?

The aim of this study is to assess the potential of using longlines to harvest catfishes by reviewing historical data on catch rates and selectivity of longlines set in freshwater environments in South Africa. These data will then be used in combination with contemporary data to determine realistic expectations and labour day returns from longline fishing. These self-help approaches could then be used for harvesting fish by rural communities.
