Estuarine ecosystem connectivity and fish species diversity and abundance

For a number of years I have been involved in research on the biogeography of African fishes associated with estuaries. Recent SAIAB studies have indicated that fish distribution patterns in South African estuaries are changing, with tropical species extending their distribution further south and endemic, temperate species not extending as far north as in the past. This has led to compositional changes to fish assemblages in the subtropical / warm temperate transitional zone and may soon affect the composition of fish communities in core warm temperate systems. Monitoring of such changes is important if a full understanding of the impact of global change is to be documented and understood.
