Classification and ecological functioning of Eastern Cape microinlets and microestuaries

This multidisciplinary study, in collaboration with scientists and postgraduate students at NMMU, seeks to classify micro-inlets and micro-estuaries according to physico-chemical and biotic characteristics, and also to answer the question – when does a micro-inlet become a micro-estuary? By studying the abiotic drivers, together with an understanding of the microphytobenthos, meiobenthos, zoobenthos, phytoplankton, zooplankton and fishes, we aim to determine whether there are significant differences between micro-inlets and micro-estuaries and how these systems differ from other types of estuaries in the Eastern Cape Province.
