SAIAB Conservation planning
SAIAB is taking the lead in mapping freshwater fish sanctuaries for the National Freshwater Ecosystems Priority Areas (NFEPA) project, in partnership with the CSIR and SANBI.
SAIAB has also been contracted by SANBI to produce maps for the new NEMBA Alien Invasive Species regulations, with the help of organised angling, conservation authorities and biodiverisity esperts. The project is featured in the news section of SAIAB's website. Inland fisheries is though to be very valuable to the South African economy, but very little information is available to manage it. We are doing further research to map the inland fisheries resources and its use (Jim McCafferty MSc project).
