As an NRF research facility, SAIAB is an agency of government with responsibility to ensure that emerging scientists are exposed to the best the nation has to offer – this includes practical insight into scientific research as well as an appreciation of the important role effective communication of research plays in developing public awareness of science. To this end an Aquatic Biodiversity Course (Winter School) is offered annually to undergraduate students from universities throughout South Africa.

Research staff also provide development training programmes for aquatic scientists and fisheries personnel from many African countries.
