Seminar Series 2018

Denis Tweddle (Honorary Research Associate, NRF-SAIAB)

Aquatic environments destroyed and fish stocks collapsed in Malawi; Twin crises facing Zambezian rivers and lakes

This talk combines two presentations made at the recent PanAfrican Fish and Fisheries Association (PAFFA) conference in Malawi.

Part 1. A comparison of fish samples collected in Malawi’s rivers and streams in the 1970s with more recent sampling at the same sites, reveals major changes in fish species composition and abundance, closely correlated with habitat destruction.

Part 2. Fisheries throughout the Zambezi system are in crisis due to overfishing and use of environmentally destructive gears. Examples to be covered are Upper Zambezi floodplains, Kafue Flats, and Lake Malombe.

Date: Tuesday, 6th November 2018

Time: 10.30am
